  1. Coal Miner

From the recording Goldfish Diaries

Lyrics

Workin' in a mine he finds himself
trying to provide for his love
covered in soot for his sweetheart
his lungs are black enough to keep him trapped

but when he gets home he knocks the door off the hinge
when he gets home she slaps her mouth on his
she doesn't care he's dirty as a ditch
when he gets home the blackness he forgets

it's worth it
it's worth it

took the job when he was 23
a baby on the way with no ring
he wanted to be everything she needed
now he's diggin deep for the diamond he can't afford

but when he gets home she's in her yellow dress
when he gets home her clean hands touch his
she doesn't care his pockets carry only lent
when he gets home the blackness he forgets
it's worth it
it's worth it

when he gets home he pulls her in
when he gets home her stomach starts to lift
she doesn't care she's weightless in his grip
when he gets home the blackness he forgets
when he gets home it's worth it

track notes:
The Coal Miner came to me in late winter while living in an apartment just outside Dinkytown in Minneapolis, MN with my girlfriend at the time. She was the first person I would always play my new songs for and would always be brutally honest with me about her opinion. As painful as it was at times to hear she didn't like a new song I had been working diligently on it made it that much more exciting when she wept the first time I played this song for her. Working a monotonous job as a bank Teller was my coal mine at the time and for her, in my first real love, it was "worth it."
